Indian external storage market in the first half of 2002 totalled $36.5 million ahead of Hong Kong, which had a revenue of $28.5 million, according to the Garter Dataquest's Asia-Pacific research.
In capacity estimates, it was 1,179 terabytes of storage capacity usage by India, it said.
Email, video, digital imaging and audio information are contributing to a massive explosion in storage capacity, Matthew Boon, principal analyst, Gartner, Asia Pacific said.
The demand from emerging data-heavy content technologies is being felt not just in the mature markets of the region but from emerging markets like China, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia, he said.
Singapore and India registered fairly similar levels of overall regional marketshare, Boon added, "Interestingly, whether classed as a mature market such as Australia and Singapore or immature market such as India, there continues to be direct correlation between server revenue and storage revenues in many markets of Asia Pacific.
South Korea ranked number one in external storage revenue in Asia-Pacific at $147 million with China next at $102.4 million.
Australia, Taiwan and rest of Asia Pacific totalled revenue at $79 million, $56.6 million and $45.8 million respectively.
Singapore registered a revenue of $39.5 million.
Hewlett Packard was the overall market leader in external revenue storage with 22 per cent marketshare followed by EMC, IBM, HDS, Sun Microsystems, Dell, Network Appliance and Storage Tek respectively.
