West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday demanded an inquiry into the derailment of five bogies of the Howrah-Dehradun Doon Express in Uttar Pradesh, stating it should be probed whether it was an 'accident or an incident'. "Since the accident has taken place during a countrywide bandh, we want this to be probed. Who has caused this mishap? It has to be seen whether this is truly an accident or an incident," Banerjee, a former railway minister, said.

According to some eye-witnesses, there was a sudden thud after which 11 coaches of the train jumped off the tracks. Over 100 people were injured when 13 bogies of the Kalka Express were derailed near Malwa station in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday afternoon. Twelve persons were killed and ten injured on Saturday when a train ran over them at a railway crossing in Bilaspur district, Chattisgarh, a senior railway police official said. The victims were crossing the tracks when the mishap took place at a spot near Tarbahar area of the town on the Mumbai-Howrah rail route, Inspector General (Railway) R K Devangan said. The gates of the crossing were closed as two trains were approaching the spot on parallel tracks, he said.
