Lashkar-e-Tayiba operative David Coleman Headley had taken boat trips around the Mumbai harbour in April 2008 and stored information of possible landing sites in a global positioning system (GPS) device later used by the LeT to carry out the 26/11 terror attacks, court documents have revealed. In a meeting with co-conspirators in Pakistan in March 2008, Headley discussed potential landing sites in Mumbai for a team of attackers that would arrive by sea.

The Global Positioning System doesn't work in buildings as the satellite signals it uses cannot get through walls. But, in this system, a cellphone can use nearby Wi-Fi transmitters instead of satellites -- it triangulates their signals to calculate its position, which it then displays on a map, the New Scientist reported. The system is being currently tested in Finland.

In an attempt to curb bogus voting and monitor the migration of voters across India, the Election Commission is planning to link the Census data of 2011 with its electoral rolls. The EC then plans to use global positioning system to automatically record the voters' migration or shifting of residence.Once the Census data is made available to the Election Commission, it will be clubbed with the electoral rolls. The GPS chip would be added to the electronic photo identity cards.
