Pakistan's supreme court chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry constituted a 17-judge bench on Thursday, to hear petitions challenging the amnesty granted to President Asif Ali Zardari and close aides under a controversial law that expired last month.
"This is our stand that hijab is not an essential religious practice. There was a statement by Dr B R Ambedkar in the Constituent Assembly where he said 'let us keep the religious instructions outside educational institutions'," Karnataka Advocate General Prabhuling Navadgi told the full bench of the high court, which is hearing the hijab case.
Eminent jurist and former Attorney General of India Soli J Sorabjee on Wednesday said that Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P D Dinkaran should not preside over judicial proceedings till his name is cleared of the land grabbing allegations. "In the fitness of things, till the time he is cleared of the allegations, he (Dinakaran) should voluntarily desist from taking up judicial work," Sorabjee said.
