Air India on Thursday increased the fuel surcharge component in fares on several routes.
Vistara announced the new fare model giving its economy class customers the choice to forego complimentary meal for a ticket price which is Rs 500-1000 cheaper than the standard fare.
Foreign airlines charge $100-200 or euro 75-150 for excess baggage, while Indian airlines charge Rs 300-500 per kg above 15 kg.
"The return fare on economy class to most European capitals from Mumbai are close to 50,000 plus. If an LCC can offer direct connectivity for a basic fare of 25,000 with additional top ups for meals, baggage and blankets, which further takes the fare to, say, 35,000, it is still a value deal."
A Mumbai-Delhi air ticket is now available upwards of Rs 3,700 for next day travel on all airlines.
