Cola wars are pass, it's things like mobile phone services that are the real competition for Coke products, said Neville Isdell, chairman and chief operating officer of Coca-Cola, the world's largest beverage company. In India, strategy is no longer about competing with global rival PepsiCo or other local soft drink brands. Instead, it's about influencing consumer choice away from such purchases as rock-bottom pre-paid mobile cards to buying a Coke product.

Citing the need for a more liberal regime for the banking and financial sector, RBI has opposed bilateral trade agreements. With no multilateral pacts with the WTO, the government had entered into free trade agreements, whose scope was later expanded to services, investment and even bilateral tax treaties. RBI has urged other countries such as UK, US and Europe to show reciprocity in granting branch licenses to Indian banks as they expect a similar treatment from India.

National carrier Air India's strategy to cut full-service flights and replace them with low-cost services by Air India Express on its West Asian routes has backfired. The passenger load factor of the flag carrier's low-cost subsidiary for West Asia has fallen a steep 11 percentage points over the last six months as a result of competition from new low-cost entrants and fare wars by incumbents. The PLF on the Dubai-India route fell from 83 to 78 per cent in the same period.
