The Supreme Court on Friday appointed former judge Justice H S Bedi as the chairman of the monitoring authority looking into the case of 22 alleged fake encounter killings in Gujarat between 2002 and 2006. The apex court said it wanted the supervision and monitoring of the investigation in the cases to be done by "someone whose integrity is completely beyond any question".

Sylvester, a key witness in the Soharabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, made a dramatic escape from the Gujarat police's custody but was rearrested late on Saturday night. Sylvester, who fled after being produced in a court in Udaipur, was picked up by a Special Task Force of the Rajasthan police from Gopalpura area in Udaipur near the Vrindavan Garden at around 10.30 pm. Vadodara Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said Sylvester was arrested as he tried to enter his house.
