Zenit St Petersburg became the first Russian team to win the European Super Cup when goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak and record signing Danny, who scored on his debut, earned a 2-1 win over Manchester United on Friday.

Zenit, the UEFA Cup holders, outplayed the European champions at the Stade Louis II and held on for a deserved win despite Nemanja Vidic pulling one back for United 17 minutes from time.

United's miserable evening was compounded when Paul Scholes was red-carded for handball in the dying stages.

Pogrebnyak, who missed the UEFA Cup final through suspension, headed Zenit in front after 44 minutes.

Danny, who joined this week in a 30 million euro deal (24.2 million pounds) from Dynamo Moscow, doubled the lead after a superb solo run.
