World number seven Anju Bobby George failed to finish on the podium at the IAAF Japan Grand Prix after finishing fourth with a below par performance in Osaka on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Indian, who went into the meet as one of the favourites alongside Grace Upshaw of the USA, managed only a 6.46m.

Japan's Kumiko Ikeda emerged as the surprise winner claiming the gold with a leap of 6.65m. Upshaw won the silver with a jump of 6.58m while another home challenger Maho Hanaoka clinched the bronze clearing 6.57m.

Asian Games gold medallist Anju, who last year became the first Indian to win a medal at the World Athletic Championships in Paris, had last month cleared 6.66m to win the first National Athletic Circuit Meet at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in New Delhi.

Her personal best of 6.74m is also a national record in women's long jump.
