India win Asia-Oceania Jr Davis Cup

May 02, 2004 15:40 IST

Indian colts capped their golden run by blanking top seeds Australia 2-0 to emerge the Asia-Oceania zonal champions in the Junior Davis Cup tennis competition in Colombo on Saturday.

Jeevan Nedunchezhian defeated Matt Symons 6-2, 6-4 before Rupesh Roy overcame Steven Goh 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to help India maintain their all-win record in the tournament.

The inconsequential doubles match was abandoned.

The Indian boys, including Sanam Singh as the third member and Sandeep Kirtane as coach, had earlier booked their berth in the 16-nation World Group finals to be played in September in Barcelona by reaching the semi-finals.

The trio beat Korea and Philippines in the group phase before knocking out Thailand and Japan in the quarter-finals and semis respectively.

All India Tennis Association (AITA) President Yashwant Sinha conveyed his heartiest congratulations to the winning team, while Secretary General Anil Khanna said the boys have brought great laurels to the country.
