Demanding registration of murder cases against those involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Shiromai Akali Dal asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday to ensure justice to victims of the senseless violence or else quit.

In a statement here, party chief Parkash Singh Badal asked Congress President Sonia Gandhi to break her silence on "the sensitive issue of her family's role in the riots".

He demanded the immediate dismissal of Union Minister Jagdish Tytler from the cabinet and registration of murder cases against him and others indicted by the Nanavati commission report.

"Either ensure justice to the hapless victims of the 1984 massacre or quit," Badal told the Prime Minister.

He said the disclosure made by then Lt Governor of Delhi P G Gavai about Rajiv Gandhi government not seeking army help deliberately had provided compelling and irrefutable proof that violence took place at the behest of the then regime.

Badal urged Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Managing Committee chief Paramjit Singh Sarna and other Sikh politicians owing allegiance to the "guilty men" of 1984, to keep away from them.

The "massacre" of Sikhs in 1984 was not an issue that concerned the Sikh community alone, he said, adding it was a human tragedy that had shaken the conscience of every civilised person in the world.

Badal has convened a meeting of senior party colleagues here on August 13 to discuss the future course of action in the wake of the Nanavati commission report.
