Insurgents killed Manipur's Inspector-General of Police T Thangthuam in an ambush in Oinam area of Bishenpur district on Saturday, official sources said.
Thangthuam was returning to Imphal from Churachandpur district when heavily armed insurgents attacked his party at Oinam, about 25 km from Imphal, at around 0930 IST, the sources said.
Police personnel escorting the IGP (intelligence) retaliated and a heavy exchange of fire continued for some time, the sources said.
Security forces have rushed to the spot.
