Upping the ante, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Sunday said it would, if necessary, go for a showdown with the Centre on the issue of temple construction in Ayodhya and said the outfit would fully abide by the decision taken by Hindu sants on the issue.

VHP vice-president Acharya Giriraj Kishore said the current meeting of the Sangh Parivar affiliate may take a  "hard decision" with regard to Ayodhya. "Whatever the sants decide, we will certainly execute that," he said.

Parishad's international working president Ashok Singhal said, "If the situation arises for a confrontation, we will go for confrontation."

"If the sants take a decision, it is the full responsibility of the government (to hand over the land for temple construction in Ayodhya) because we have given time to the government," he said.

His remarks came a day after the VHP adopted a resolution asking the Centre to hand over the disputed temple site in Ayodhya to Ram Janambhoomi Trust before end of February next or risk a confrontation.
