Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh on Tuesday directed the government to make a statement in the House on Wednesday on the inquiry into the alleged underworld links of actor Salman Khan [Images] as purportedly claimed by the actor in a telephonic conversation.

The direction came after the leader of the opposition Pandurang Phundkar urged the chairman to ask the government to make a statement on the 'serious' issue in the Upper House as it would be made in the Lower House on Wednesday.

Pointing out that the issue was serious, state Bharatiya Janata Party chief Nitin Gadkari and Shiv Sena legislator Madhukar Sarpotdar said the state government should make a statement on it in the MLC.
