Now Zaheera's brother retracts statement

November 18, 2004 23:27 IST

Nasibullah, brother of prime witness in Best Bakery case Zaheera Shaikh, on Thursday retracted his police statement.

He told the trial court in Mumbai that he did not remember the faces of those who had set fire to the bakery during the post-Godhra riots.

Other eye witnesses, including Zaheera's sister-in-law Yasmin Shaikh, have identified some accused.

In his police statement, Nasibullah had named some accused and specified their role in attacking the bakery.

Nasibullah told designated judge Abhay Thipsay that someone hit him from behind on the head and he fell unconscious and in that state he was taken to hospital.

Nasibullah said a huge mob came to the bakery and started throwing stones at the inmates.

The witness told the court that he had merely narrated the incident to the police but had not disclosed names of any persons involved in the attack on the bakery.
