November 20, 2003 17:36 IST

The Centre on Thursday dispatched paramilitary forces to restore normalcy in Assam, where 30 Biharis have been killed.

A Union home ministry spokesperson said 600 Border Security Force personnel were dispatched to Tinsukia and Dibrugarh to help the local administration in restoring peace.

A concerned Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee spoke to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and asked them to ensure peace.

Yadav said in Patna that the PM assured to send more central forces to Assam to quell the anti-Bihari violence.

Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said in Bhopal that the situation in Assam was "a matter of grave concern". He said the Centre was in constant touch with Assam and Bihar governments to ensure normalcy.
