SC asks Karnataka to release 4,500 cusecs of water

The Supreme Court on Thursday asked Karnataka to release 4,500 cusecs of water everyday to Tamil Nadu till the Cauvery River Authority meets on February 10.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice R C Lahoti directed that the CRA meeting would not be adjourned it any of the four participating chief ministers do not come.

The counsels of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka assured the court that chief ministers of their states would be present at the meeting.

In the absence of consensus in the CRA meeting, the decision of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is the chairperson of the CRA, shall be final, the court said.

The CRA can change or modify this interim order, it added.

The decision taken at the CRA meeting will be treated as an order o the court.
