Relax: A very hatke movie!

B Anuradha | March 01, 2005 18:03 IST

Producers California Media Group headed by NRIs Manjula Reddy, Vardhan and Pappi Reddy began its innings with an interesting film, Relax.

Debutant director Pradeep Shetty's offbeat film included a rare mix of comedy with astrology. It is based on a 'different' story amid routine romantic Telugu movies, and the makers should be lauded for betting on such a concept.

Newcomers Rohan and Anjali play lovers. They happen to meet a revered astrologer (Vijaychander) and he makes three predictions -- Rohan would become a lakhpati overnight, become very popular and would kill one person.

Though Rohan does not believe the predictions initially, the first two come true. Now, the couple search frantically for the astrologer, in order to avert the third prediction that Rohan will kill somebody.

Shetty begins on a promising note. He relies on the myth that astrological predictions could come true. But later, he justifies that astrology is a science, which is quite debatable.

Rohan doesn't look like the conventional hero, and impresses in a few sequences. But he has to improve on his emotional scenes. Mumbai girl Anjali looks pretty but her accepting his proposal out of the blue appears unconvincing.

Comedian Brahmanandam as a security guard to Rohan and Ali, who calls himself Ram Nepal Varma, evokes a few laughs. Ali seems to have more footage than the others being Rohan's friend. M S Narayana as a drunkard and Prakash Reddy as a corrupt police keep the audience entertained.

Producer Pappi Reddy's claim that he chose this plot out of about ten scripts seems true since it is different from the routine films. The producers intended to make good entertainers with varied plots. If the film succeeds despite the new faces, California Media Group seems to have a promising start.

Composer Ramana Gogula, who is known for hits like Thamudu and Badri, comes up with a refreshing album. His background score is appropriate and makes a good comeback.
