The US-based 3Com Corporation on Tuesday opened its India research and development centre in Hyderabad through a strategic partnership with Mars Telecom.

The IDC will complement 3Com's R&D facilities in the United States, the United Kingdom and Taiwan.

"It will be a centre of excellence in software development for 3Com's line of VoIP products and will support future growth into wireless, switching and network management," Mohan Sayani, Director, IDC, 3Com said. A team of 35 engineers who are working on VoIP technology with 3Com global R&D team based in Chicago and Marlboro, US, would be doubled in the next 12 months, he said.

Ramesh Sundaresan, Managing Director, Mars Telecom, said the partnership with 3Com would leverage Mars' local market knowledge and technical expertise and experience would provide highly competent resources and world-class infrastructure for 3Com.

Rich Boule, senior director, voice engineering at 3Com, who earlier inaugurated the IDC, said setting up this R&D centre in India is a strategic decision and complements 3Com's global technology development effort.
