National Association of Software and Service Companies, Manufacturers Association of Information Technology and Confederation of Indian Industry, the three organisers of the annual national infotech exhibition, have parted ways.
This brings the curtains down on the country's largest infotech show which used to be held every year in Mumbai along with Nasscom's annual meeting.
Nasscom says that the exhibition was not received well among the members of the software industry association mainly due to the bleak economic scenario.
"At the moment, we think that the exhibition would not be meeting its objectives. Besides, Nasscom also thinks that it is rather appropriate to concentrate on Nasscom 2003," said a Nasscom functionary.
Nasscom 2003 would he held in Mumbai in the second week of February 2003.
"We are not holding the exhibition along with Nasscom 2003 as we are of the view that the industry is not ready for it at the moment," said Vinnie Mehta, executive director, Mait.
However, Mait and CII are currently evaluating alternative options. "We are currently talking to find out an alternative. We might hold the exhibition some time later," said Dilip Chenoy, deputy director general, CII.
"We are looking at alternate markets like Delhi to hold the exhibition some time later this year. We are working on the details," Mehta added.
However, according to industry sources, Mait and CII feel that the exhibition would not get the required mileage in the current format as it gets overshadowed by Nasscom's event.
"Nasscom seminar series has a huge brand equity and an exhibition held along with it does not get much mileage. This is one of the reasons for not holding the exhibition along with the Nasscom event," said an industry source.
Infotech exhibitions in the country have seen a tough time in the recent times with many of them failing to draw enough business and visitors, a reflection of the industry's current state of affairs.
India Internet World, the most high profile of these, has also met with a similar fate with the organisers deciding to wind up the show.
