The Centre is contemplating to create Special Economic Zones for various service sectors in different parts of the country, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Arun Jaitley said in Kolkata on Tuesday.
"We have proposed to the various state governments to give us ideas on how to create SEZs for the various service sectors," Jaitley told PTI.
The Union minister, who inaugurated the country's first SEZ for gems and jewellery in Kolkata, however, said that the whole idea is currently in a conceptual state and the Centre is seeking proposals from the state governments in this regard.
He further said that the idea is to create SEZs for different service sectors like banking, insurance and hospitals.
Emphasising the significance of such a move, Jaitley said it would stop the flight of IT professionals from the country as for instance if there is a SEZ for IT services in West Bengal, it would automatically lead to the return of all IT professionals permanently.
"Since service sectors are part of larger SEZs, this idea must be given ample thought by the state governments in days to come," Jaitley said, adding, "This is an indication of the changing trends in the overall economy."
He said the Centre is already planning to launch a huge project in this sphere in Mumbai in days to come.
