The Sensex on Friday commenced with a loss of 11 points at 5,710. The sentiment was bearish till the mid-afternoon deals, as the index dropped below the 5,700 levels -- touching a low of 5,684.
The markets bounced back from its lows in late noon deals as renewed buying in heavyweights, PSUs, tech and other select old economy counters lifted the index to an intra-day high of 5,801.
The Sensex finally wrapped up the last day of the trading week with a gain of 66 points at 5,786.
The Nifty gained 1.62% (30 points) to close at 1,834.
Reliance ended with a gain of 1.41% (Rs 8) at Rs 574. ITC clocked a per cent gain (Rs 11) at Rs 986. HLL, however, dropped 2.57% (Rs 5) to Rs 189.
Infosys flared up 2.08% (Rs 114) to Rs 5,576 on sustained buying support. Wipro (up Rs 53 or 3.56% to Rs 1,557) and Satyam (up Rs 7 or 2.13%) also ended with gains.
SBI scaled up 2.42% (Rs 14) to Rs 596. While HPCL logged 4.24% gains (Rs 18) to Rs 449, BHEL added 2% (Rs 11) to Rs 563. MTNL moved up 2.15% (Rs 3) to Rs 133.
Bharti shot up 8.80% (Rs 11) to Rs 140. ONGC at Rs 736 (up Rs 21 or 2.94%), BSES at Rs 579 (up Rs 9 or 1.52%) and ICICI Bank at Rs 323 (up Rs 14 or 4.55%) notched up significant gains on sustained buying support.
Tisco raked in 2.46% gains (Rs 10) to Rs 414.
Tata Power added 1.93% (Rs 7) to Rs 376.
Gujarat Ambuja moved up 4.38% (Rs 12) to Rs 298. Grasim and ACC ended with marginal gains at Rs 1,079 (up Rs 3) and Rs 257 (up a rupee), respectively.
L&T, however, ended a per cent lower (Rs 5) at Rs 498.
Bajaj and Hero Honda ended in the red at Rs 1,025 (down Rs 8) and Rs 464 (down Rs 2), respectively. Tata Motors, however, held on to its gains, and advanced 2.50% (Rs 13) to close at Rs 532.
Ranbaxy dropped 3.81% (Rs 38) to Rs 951. Cipla was down Rs 6 at Rs 1,145. Dr. Reddy's, however, gained 1.88% (Rs 25) to Rs 1,332.
HDFC and HDFC Bank ended at lower levels at Rs 645 (down Rs 4) and Rs 352 (down Rs 7), respectively. Zee, too, ended with a loss of 1.80% (Rs 3) at Rs 145.
