Personal computer shipment to India grew 19.5 per cent to cross 2.5 million units in 2003 with HP securing the top slot with a 9.6 per cent overall market share followed closely by HCL at 9.1 per cent in terms of units shipment, according to Gartner.
IBM was placed third with 6.4 per cent share, while it could not make an impact in the desktop space, it came second after HP in notebook segment, a Gartner press release said in New Delhi.
India garnered 8.64 per cent market share in the Asia Pacific region.
Dell had a market share of 3.32 per cent and Zenith had 2.80 per cent while others accounted for 68.70 per cent, it said.
Dell registered the highest yearly growth of 97.84 per cent followed by HCL Infosystems at 52.77 per cent and IBM at 46.85 per cent.
While in case of HCL, it was the company's focus on SMBs that paid off, in case of HCL, it was finance and banking and government verticals in the second half of 2003 that proved good for the company.
Desktop shipment grew 18 per cent over the last year and notebooks grew at a whopping 71 per cent.
"Improved business conditions and growing economy led to an increase in infrastructure investments in India during 2003," Vinod Nair, research analyst, Gartner India, was quoted as saying.
