India has offered to host the G-20 summit in Agra next month. Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath has already sent invitations to member countries for the summit.
The grouping includes developing countries like India, Brazil, China and South Africa. The tentative dates for the summit are February 19-20.
Officials said there was likely to be a day-long brainstorming session in Agra, after which the ministerial delegations would go to New Delhi.
Senior officials told Business Standard India had also invited the coordinating members of the G-90 and G-33 groupings to the meet.
The G-90 comprises Africa, Caribbean and the Pacific nations, the African Union and Least Developed Countries, while G-33 comprises developing countries seeking safeguard mechanisms for certain products that are vital to their respective economies.
The meeting is expected to discuss the present state of play at the WTO. Commerce Minister Kamal Nath is expected to hold bilateral discussions on WTO issues with other countries during the World Economic Forum in Davos later this month.
New Delhi is already hosting EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson later this month. This is the first bilateral meeting between the two countries after the change of guard at the EU.
Former EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy is being considered as a front-runner for the post of director general at the WTO.
