Maharashtra govt to up tax on lotteries

Maharashtra government would hike tax on lotteries operating in the state, including those from other states.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the state Cabinet in Mumbai on Wednesday, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh told reporters.

As a result of the decision, the state government's revenues from lotteries would go up from Rs 26 crore (Rs 260 million) to Rs 150 crore (Rs 1.5 billion), while the number of lottery draws, about 2,500 per day, would come down to about 150 per day, he said.
