A top executive of the Hyundai conglomerate, who was embroiled in the embarrassing scandal over payment of money to North Korea to agree to a historic summit with South Korea, on Monday committed suicide.

Chung Mong-hun, one of the sons of the company's late founder, is believed to have jumped from his office on the 12th floor of the company's headquarters in Seoul.

Hyundai has been accused of paying up to $100 million to North Korea to agree to the historic summit.

Chung, who heads Hyundai-Asan, a subsidiary involved in some joint ventures with the North Korean government, has been charged in one of the cases filed in this connection.
