Electronic Data Systems, a global services provider company, has set up its business process services centre in Mumbai with an initial capital investment of $12 million even as the entity plans to triple its Indian workforce to 3,500 by the end of 2004.
The 500-seat facility set up under its 'Best Shore' initiative would have 700 employees by this year-end and provide services such as inbound and outbound support, e-mail, web-chat and help desk, EDS president of global delivery for business process services Steve Heidt told newspersons in Mumbai on Monday.
EDS currently has nearly 1,100 employees in the country, including 700 and 150 employees at the solution centres in Chennai and Gurgaon respectively, he said adding, by the end of 2004 the company expects to more than triple its workforce.
"We can either enhance the capacity of existing centres or set up another centre in the country", he said. However, Heidt refused to divulge details on whether EDS has shortlisted a location for the latter.
EDS head of BPO operations in India Sudipto Mukherjee said the initial investment of $12 million does not include costs related to the transfer of technology, expertise and other intangible assets.
'Best Shore' initiative of EDS was aimed at consistent deployment of best-in-class methodologies, software and hardware across the company's network of more than 300 facilities worldwide.
