Domestic passenger car and bike sales during the month of June headed in opposite directions with the former managing to beat hardening interest rates blues with a 16.36 per cent growth but motorcycle sales skidded by 17.17 per cent.

According to figures released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, of the 13 car makers, 10 registered positive growth led by country's biggest car maker Maruti Udyog Ltd.

On the other hand, top three bike makers of the country -- Hero Honda, Bajaj Auto Ltd and TVS Motor Co -- posted a year-on-year decline in sales during the month mainly on account of the impact of rising interest rates.

While the total passenger car sales stood at 94,002 units as against 80,784 units in the same month a year ago, domestic motorcycle sales during the month were at 4,37,776 units as against 5,28,499 units in June 2006, down by 17.17

Riding on aggressive marketing strategy, MUL reported a 26.73 per cent increase in sales at 47,783 units as against 37,704 units in the same month last year.

Rivals Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors, however, were unable to keep the momentum going, posting a dip of 3.95 per cent and 7.09 per cent respectively.

On the motorcycles front, market leader Hero Honda posted a decline of 8.95 per cent at 2,38,195 units as compared to 2,61,628 units in the corresponding month last year.
