Australia elect to bat in first ODI

Australia captain Ricky Ponting [Images] won the toss and elected to bat in the first of three one-day internationals at Docklands Stadium on Wednesday.

Simon Katich will open the batting with Adam Gilchrist [Images] in a new partnership after Australian selectors dropped Matthew Hayden [Images] from the one-day side.

Victoria state captain Cameron White, rushed into the side after all rounder Brad Hogg [Images] was ruled out with a knee injury, was named as 12th man, though under experimental rules can be tactically substituted during the match.

Pakistan all rounder Shahid Afridi [Images], one of three spinners in the World XI, is the 12th man for his side.
