Tendulkar replacement approved

September 10, 2004 16:46 IST

The Event Technical Committee for the ICC Champions Trophy approved a request from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to replace injured batting ace Sachin Tendulkar with Rohan Gavaskar.

Gavaskar, part of the 15-member Indian squad that was fielded for the Holland tri-series and the NatWest Challenge, was retained in the side for the Champions Trophy after Tendulkar was ruled out of the September 10-25 tournament due to a tennis elbow.

Grounds for countries seeking player replacements are classified as either medical -- injury or illness -- or exceptional. Once a player is replaced in the squad, he can no longer take any part in the tournament.
