Gujarat steal win

Gujarat completed a victory over Bengal in the Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match with two balls and two wickets to spare in the mandatory overs on the final day of the four-day match at the Kanchanjungha stadium in Siliguri on Sunday. With one win in three matches the team is now placed second in the table, along with Delhi, on six points, while Bengal have four points afer the match.

Kirit Damani scored the winning run off Ranadeb Bose to give Gujarat their first win of the season . Damani, in company of number ten batsman Lalit Patel pulled off the win for his team, finishing his innings on unbeaten 15 .

Bengal declared their second innings on 279 for six on the last day after adding 118 runs to their overnight score of 161 in the in the post-lunch session.

Gujarat, with a 217 runs to score in just about three hours, lost an early wicket in the form of India discard Parthiv Patel. But his partner Akshay Christian and Niraj Patel rallied to a 128-run partnership. Christian scored 67 after 159-minute stay on the wicket, while Patel punished the Bengal bowlers to a 77-ball strokeful innings of 70.

The pair had rocked on to 154 by the 30th over, but a batting slide followed Patel's dismissal.

The team strung along small partneships from thereon to cross the mark.

Gujarat made 361 in the first innings and reached the target with two balls to spare with two wickets in hand.

Earlier, Bengal skipper Rohan Gavaskar, who made 80 runs in the first innings, remained not out on 111 in the second innings. Sanjib Sanyal remained not out on 11.

Overnight batsman Deep Dasgupta, who was 36, added only one run to his overnight score. He was out in the second ball of the day when Parthiv Patel took a catch off Lalit Patel.

Gavaskar hit 14 fours off 239 balls in his 111 runs.
