Strong demand from the government, banking and technology sectors saw shipment of personal computers in India grow at an impressive 29 per cent year-on-year in 2004-05 to touch 3.6 million units, according to IDC.

In the overall PC market, HP claimed the number one spot, followed by HCL and IBM.

HCL led the desktop market in the financial year with shipments of over 475,000 units while HP led the notebook PC market with shipments in excess of 75,000 units.

X86 server shipments in India grew an impressive 29 per cent on year-on-year basis. Imperative to the growth in numbers were key installations at financial institutions, coupled with a surge in shipments in the government space.

In the last four fiscals, the overall personal computer market in India has shown a compound annual growth rate of 21 per cent. Highest growth of 80 per cent was witnessed in the notebook computer segment with the market growing to 0.22 million units.

Desktop shipments grow 19 per cent over the last four financial years to touch 3.35 million units, while the market of X-86 servers grew 26 per cent during the period to 67,093 units.

Uncertainty about the implementation of VAT, anticipation of price drops post World Trade Organisation, an uneven monsoon and fluctuations in the supply of components did not dampen the overall yearly growth in 2004-05, IDC said.
