Aiming to sell half a million mobile sets within a year, Haier -- a leading home appliances brand on Tuesday announced its foray into the Indian mobile handset market with the launch of its seven GSM mobile sets in New Delhi.
The price of newly launched mobile sets would start from Rs 3,654 and go up to Rs 14,940 per set. The mobile sets would be distributed through its national distributor 'Trust Telecom' having the support of nationwide after sales service network throughout India.
Haier, having over 60 models of mobile sets globally, would also launch its CDMA mobile sets within couple of months.
"With the launch of our seven state of the art mobile sets comprising entry-level as well as high end models, we have set a target to sell 500,000 GSM mobile sets with a turnover of Rs 250 crore (Rs 2.5 billion) in one year," said T K Banerjee, President & CEO, of Haier Appliances (India) Pvt Ltd, while addressing reporters.
Haier India, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Haier Group, plans to achieve a growth of almost 60 per cent in Indian mobile handset segment.
BPL GSM handsets @ Rs 3,900
Adding to its lineup of manufactured products, BPL Telecom on Tuesday announced the launch of its range of GSM mobile handsets and said it is the first Indian company to manufacture GSM mobile phones.
The company, which hopes to generate revenue of Rs 45 to Rs 50 crore by the end of current fiscal from the mobile handset business alone, out of its total turnover of Rs 200 crore, would retail them through their distributors and dealers network, a BPL telecom release said.
Of the seven models launched, two are manufactured in house while the other five are outsourced from Korea, it said. The handsets are priced between Rs 3,900 and Rs 11,600.
The company said it is hopeful of launching around 20 to 25 models in the next fiscal.
Hi-end models would be imported and the rest would be manufactured locally, the release said. BPL said it desired to emerge as the No 2 player in the domestic market for mobile handsets, with a market share of more than 15 per cent within the next fiscal.
"We have set a challenging task for us to achieve a 60 per cent growth in our mobile telephony segment with an intention to occupy a slot in top three mobile handsets companies," said Banerjee.
Haier India, which entered into Indian market a year ago has launched its GSM mobile sets first for North Indian market and within few days it would enter southern, eastern and western markets.
Haier has a state of the art manufacturing facility in China for GSM & CDMA mobile phone handsets with technology partnership with leading technology providers and has a production capacity of 15 million handsets per year.
