Hit hard by lack of supply of fabric due to the strike by powerloom units and transporters, readymade garment exporters apprehend losing orders worth Rs 700-1000 crore (Rs 7-10 billion).
"We are on the verge of losing contracts worth Rs 700-1000 crore as there is no fabric available, making it impossible for us to complete our orders by the deadline. Even before the powerloom strike was called off transporters have gone off the road," Virender Uppal, chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council told PTI in New Delhi.
He said some of the importers had already threatened the manufacturers about cancellation of orders if the deadline was not met.
Uppal said the buyers abroad were finalising their orders and once the cancellations begin their effect would trickle down to the next season also.
