The Japanese police have launched an investigation after a drone was found on the roof of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s office. Abe was away at the time, as he was attending an Asian-African conference.
The propeller-driven drone, about 50-centimetres in diameter, was carrying a camera, a flare-like device and a plastic bottle, it was found. The bomb squad was later called to cart it away.
Aerial footage showed dozens of policemen surrounding the drone and covering it with a giant blue tarpaulin.
Officials denied making any comments on the matter. According to several reports, the drone had a radioactive symbol on it and a small amount of radiation was also detected. It was not immediately clear as to who sent the drone or what its purpose was. No injuries have been reported.
In a similar incident in January, a hobbyist’s drone had crashed in to the grounds of the White House, prompting the Secret Service to launch an investigation.
