Putting a premium on knowledge, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Monday said in the age of low-intensity conflicts, a strong intelligence network was more important than sophisticated technology.

"Sophisticated technology is useful in a full-fleged war, but to control violence in remote corners of the country, information and not weapons are required," he said addressing the 27th All India Police Radio Officers' Conference.

Expressing satisfaction over the implementation of the the Integrated National Police Telecommunication Network up to the district level, Patil called for extending the project upto the level of the police station.

He said that the process of integrating the police network through technology should not be stalled midway in favour of a newer technology.

"Redundancy should not be a worry as new technologies keep coming up every day," he said.

The Centre was willing to provide dedicated funds for the latest technology and had already released Rs 800 crore for the purpose.

Acknowledging the contribution of police radio officers in times of natural calamities and during elections, Patil called for sharing of information and a policy to implement the latest technology in the country.

Patil also released a souvenir on the occasion of the inaugural day of the two-day seminar, which has participants from the industry and police forces across the country to narrow in on the latest technology available for security operations.
