The situation in curfew-bound Leh town remained under control on Friday as police, civil administration and army kept a close watch on developments there following clashes between Buddhists and Muslims, triggered by reports of alleged desecration of the Quran at a mosque in Kargil.

"The situation is under control and no untoward incident has taken place since the imposition of curfew on Thursday," Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) K Rajendra Kumar told PTI.

Kumar, who has been camping in the Ladakh capital town, said authorities were reviewing the situation from time to time to look at the possibility of relaxing the curfew for some time.

Four more arrests have been made since Thursday evening as police swung into action after four unoccupied houses and three vehicles were set on fire, forcing the imposition of curfew. Thirty-one people were arrested from the town, where the army staged a flag march to bring the situation under control.

Clashes erupted between Muslims and Buddhists at Bodh Kharboo in Kargil area on Monday after some unidentified persons tore off pages of the holy book in a mosque there. Tension spread across the Ladakh region, including Leh and Kargil towns between the two dominant communities.
