Jammu and Kashmir state on Tuesday got its new Director General Of police as the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, decided to promote Kuldeep Khuda, to the top police job.

Khuda, a local IPS officer of 1974 batch would now replace Gopal Sharma as the new DGP as Sharma has been appointed security advisor to the chief minister.

Sharma gets the advisory assignment after having remained the longest serving DGP of the state. He remained DGP of the sensitive state for over four years.

Khuda, who was all along ahead of other contenders for the top slot, is known to have given a major fillip to the state intelligence department during his tenure as the additional director general (intelligence), an assignment from which he now moves to the top slot in the state police.

P S Gill, another IPS officer of 1974 batch, has also been elevated to DG status and posted as transport commissioner of the state.
