Curfew was relaxed for two hours on Monday in Jammu and Kashmir's Leh and Kargil towns following improvement in situation after last week's clashes over alleged desecration of the holy Quran.

"Curfew has been relaxed from 9.30 am to 11.30 am in Kargil town while in Leh, the relaxation will be from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm," Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Basharat Ahmad Dhar told PTI.

He said the curfew was being relaxed segment-wise and the relaxation may be further extended if everything remains under control in the twin towns of the Ladakh region.

Dhar said the district administrations of Kargil and Leh will hold an all party inter-religious meeting at 11.30 am to chalk out a joint public peace proposal which would be taken to the grass root level to restore normalcy in the region.

Curfew was relaxed on Sunday in Leh for two hours with no untoward incidents being reported from the town. Communal clashes flared in Kargil town last Monday following alleged desecration of the holy Quaran in a mosque in Bodh Kharboo area.

The tension later spread to Leh town forcing authorities to clamp curfew in both towns.
