Security has been beefed up in six districts of north Bengal, sharing international borders with Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, following threats from the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation to disrupt Independence Day celebrations.

Reinforcements have been deployed along the porous border with Bangladesh in south, Nepal in northwest and Bhutan in the northeast.

A Border Security Force source said the KLO, which poses a security threat in some pockets, might carry out attacks during the Independence Day celebrations to make its presence felt in north Bengal.

There was information that the outfit's new batch (7th batch) was being trained at Chattagram in Bangladesh, he said.

BSF Deputy Inspector General, North Bengal, Sukhvinder Singh Sandhu told UNI that BSF had verified information about the seventh batch of the KLO. About 25 youths were being trained in that batch, he said, adding that the KLO would try to enter India through the porous border in Malda district of West Bengal.

"We have sent a report on this matter to the Centre and to the West Bengal government," the DIG said.
