Vyomesh Joshi, the India-born chief of Hewlett-Packard's newly formed imaging and personal systems group, is among the frontrunners to head the $75 billion corporation.

On Wednesday, HP ousted CEO Carly Fiorina following her differences with the company's board of directors over tardy execution of the board's strategy. Since then chief financial officer Robert Wayman is serving as the interim CEO.

Popularly known as 'VJ', Joshi, who holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Ohio State University, joined HP in 1980 as a research and development engineer for pen plotters.

VJ was most recently executive vice president of the former imaging and printing group.

VJ became the vice president and general manager of the former Inkjet Imaging Solutions Personal Imaging and Printing organisation in 1999.

In that position, he had worldwide responsibility for all inkjet printing and imaging platforms. He also led the HP company-wide initiative on digital imaging appliances, infrastructure and services.

In 1994, VJ became operations manager of the San Diego Imaging Operation after serving four years as research-and-development manager of two new HP businesses: large format color printing and fax/multifunction products.
