JobsThe economy may be showing signs of a slowdown, but employment generation in the country continues to steadily rise, says the latest finding of the Labour Bureau on the effect of economic slowdown on employment in India.

The Labour Bureau survey, which analysed the period between June and September, noted that the country's overall employment increased by 315,000 during this quarter.

his was a 46 per cent increase than the previous quarter (March-June 2011), which witnessed 215,000 new jobs.

The major contributor during June-September quarter remained IT/BPO, which added 204,000 jobs during this quarter.

Data of the Labour Bureau suggest that the rise in employment has been a continuous trend over the last three quarters.

During the March-June quarter, the addition of 215,000 jobs was an increase of 23.56 per cent over its previous quarter.

However, the March-December quarter had witnessed a fall of around 16 per cent. The fall in March-December quarter was largely owing to a loss of 121,000 jobs in the textile sector.

According to the report, the June-September quarter saw all but two sectors showing an increase in employment.

Only leather and transport witnessed a fall -- even that was marginal.

The maximum increase was seen in the IT/BPO sector, with 204,000 jobs during September-June.

This was followed by an increase of 42,000 jobs in textiles, 38,000 in metals, 22,000 in automobiles, 9,000 in handloom/power loom and 7,000

in gems and jewellery.

As compared to the previous year (September 2010 versus September 2011), the overall employment saw a significant increase of 911,000 jobs.

The increase in employment was led by IT/BPO, which saw a rise of 760,000 jobs, followed by metals (107,000), automobiles (71,000), gems and jewellery (8,000) and leather (7,000).

In the export-oriented units, the employment at the overall level increased by 196,000 workers, whereas in the non-exporting units it increased by 116,000.

However, while the employment saw an increase, export data over the same period from the Ministry of Commerce show a different picture.

The monthly export-import data show that exports of $26.7 billion in July fell to $24.8 billion in August and further to $23.6 billion in September.

Another trend that emerged from the survey was a shift in employment of direct workers, as compared to the contract category of workers.

During June-September, the direct workers saw an increase of employment by 318,000 workers, while contract workers' employment saw a dip of 2,000 workers.

The March-June quarter saw the direct workers increasing by 190,000 versus a relatively less increase by 25,000 of contract workers.

From September 2010 to September 2011, direct workers increased by 850,000 workers, while contract workers increased by 63,000 workers.
