Cartoon Network to up local programming

Leaders in kids genre of programming and TV content, Cartoon Network and Pogo channels will increase their localised programming this year.

Talking to reporters at the launch of its summer programming, Ian Diamond, Senior VP and General Manager of Turner Entertainment network Asia said, "Till now we have made nine full-time India-centric shows. We will increase our investments in India to develop more India-centric shows this year."

He said that the company is in talks with several production houses for making longer duration India-centric content. "Within this year, some of the new shows will be on air," he said.

Between Cartoon Network and Pogo, the company has 78 per cent channel share in kids entertainment shows on TV. "We hold number one and two position in the kids domain and hold a lion's share in the Rs 130 crore advertising pie in this category," Anshuman Misra, MD of Turner Internation India said.

On Pogo, the company will introduce two new localized show besides premiering the blockbuster Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The company will showcase its ninth local acquisition, Vikram-Betal on Cartoon Network from June.

Talking about the advertising generated on both the channels, Diamond said, "We have seen 40 percent growth in advertising from 2003 to 2004. This re-confirms ours faith in the success of these two channels as a wholesome family entertainer."
