Bad weather and human error caused the small airplane crash that killed former South Africa cricket captain Hansie Cronje, South Africa's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has said.
Cronje, banned from cricket four years ago after a match-fixing scandal, died on June 1, 2002, when the plane he was travelling in flew into a mountainside near George, about 350 km (220 miles) east of Cape Town.
In its final report on the accident on Thursday, the CAA deemed "the probable causes of the accident to be human factor-related, with weather and mechanical as well as technological factors contributing".
The CAA said the pilots of the Hawker Siddeley aircraft had to execute an instrument-guided approach due to overcast and rainy weather, but became lost after an initial missed approach.
"They flew the aircraft into a valley and crashed into the side of the mountains," the report said, adding that the airport's instrument landing system appeared only to have been "intermittently operational" at the time.
"The pilots and passenger suffered multiple injuries during the impact. The accident was considered as unsurvivable," the CAA said.
South African media hailed Cronje as arguably the country's greatest cricket captain before his career ended in disgrace when he admitted he had accepted around $130,000 (72,420 pounds) from bookmakers to influence the course of matches.
