General Motors India, 100 per cent subsidiary of General Motors Corporation, on Thursday said the company's entry level Chevrolet Spark has crossed the mark of 3 million customers globally.
The version is GM India's first clean-burning liquefied natural gas car in India, built at company's plant at Talegaon in Maharashtra.
The car has a more powerful engine compared to its competitors and give a mileage of 18kmpl.
"Out of the total sales, we feel that Chevrolet Spark would enjoy major share in total car sales for this year as small cars continue to have largest share in passengers cars market in the country," General Motors India Director (Operations) S Garg told reporters in Chandigarh on Friday.
US carmaker General Motors on Tuesday said it has won J D Power Asia Pacific 2008 award for its two cars Chevrolet Spark and Aveo U-VA produced by its Indian subsidiary.
The research firm ranked small car Chevrolet Spark as the leader in terms of quality in the compact car segment with a score of 127, mid-size sedan Chevrolet Aveo topped the midsize segment with a score of 109 while Chevrolet Optra (97) was ranked highest in the premium midsize segment, GM India said in a statement.
The Korean company has sold over 1.36 million cars and has exported 535,000 units.
It gets new colour options, revised front and rear fascias, re-shaded interior and a newly designed instrument cluster.
The project has already entered the design stage, and the company has asked its part suppliers for initial cost estimates.
Karl Slym, president and managing director of General Motors India Private Limited, said the company would launch Chevrolet Cruze, its new offering in the Chevrolet Spark segment, by third quarter of its financial year ended December 2009. Slym added, "The car will be priced similar to Chevrolet Spark. As far as the minicar is concerned, we are not competing with Tata Motors' Nano, which is a different segment."
GM India has asked customers facing problems with their remote keyless entry accessory to go to their Chevrolet dealer.
The sales comprise 1,504 units of hatchback Chevrolet Spark, 1,550 units of multi-utility vehicle Tavera, 1,227 units of Aveo/Aveo U-VA and 498 units of sedan Optra, it said.
The car is powered by a 1-litre petrol engine.
