Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju said it has been recommended that provision be made for NCC junior division/junior wing in the private schools having classes VIII to X/XII at the time of application for registration by the education boards. The plan could be initially rolled out for CBSE and ICSE affiliated schools and later extended to schools under the state education boards.

Sources said that the chapter on Lalu, titled Mitti ke Gaurav (pride of the soil), will be removed from the Hindi textbooks for class VIII from the academic session beginning in April. Instead of a chapter dedicated to Lalu, students will now read about the life and work of Mahatma Phule, a social reformer and educationist of the 19th century.

A teenage boy, who was admitted to a hospital with serious injuries after being allegedly beaten by a teacher a fortnight ago, died in a New Delhi hospital on Tuesday. Fourteen-year-old Ajay Kumar, a student of Std VIII at Sarvodaya Vidyalya in Vinod Nagar, was allegedly beaten by his teacher Shyam Lal Rathuria on October 23 for forging his parents' signature, a senior police officer said. Kumar fell on the ground after he was beaten and suffered serious head injuries.
