The quake, with a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter Scale, hit south Andaman region at 01:21 hours, the India Meteorological Department said in New Delhi.
"No problem (has been reported) so far, as far as Indians are concerned," embassy sources told PTI. The embassy had checked with known contacts in Chengdu and other sources, they said.
The temblor was described as one of moderate intensity.
