A 48-year-old man succumbed to swine flu at the SSG Hospital in Vadodara on Sunday morning, pushing the total number of H1N1 deaths in Gujarat to six. Hasmukh Hingu was admitted to the government-run hospital on August 20 with respiratory distress syndrome and had been in a critical stage since then. Hingu tested positive for swine flu on Saturday. With this, the nation-wide toll due to the H1N1 pandemic has risen to 64, hospital authorities said.

Gayatri, the victim was shifted to the Kempe Gowda Hospital on August 17, after she had complained of breathlessness. She was administered Tamiflu on arrival at the hospital. However she passed away on August 20. The test results which reached the hospital on Friday showed that she had died after contracting the deadly H1N1 virus.

Former Supreme Court judge Ranjit Singh Sarkaria, who defined Centre-state relations for over two decades, died after a prolonged illness in Chandigarh on Friday night. He was 91. He began his career as an advocate in the Patiala High Court in 1940. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in September 1973 and retired in 1981.
