A 45-year-old passenger fell to his death from an air-conditioned Uttar Pradesh roadways bus after he opened its door to spit 'pann' as the vehicle moved through the Purvanchal Expressway. The incident took place on Saturday morning near Bihi village in the Baldirai police station area. The deceased, Ram Jiavan, was a resident of Chinhat area in Lucknow. The bus has been taken to the police station for further investigation and the body has been sent for post-mortem.
The bus conductor, who was dismissed from service for allegedly halting the vehicle to allow two Muslim passengers to offer namaz on the road, was found dead on a railway track in the Ghiror area in Mainpuri, police said on Wednesday.
The double-decker bus belonged to Awadh Depot and was going to New Delhi from Lucknow.
Pilgrims at the ongoing Maha Kumbh mela in Allahabad faced a tough time on Wednesday due to the nationwide strike called by central trade unions which has brought movement of Uttar Pradesh roadways buses to a standstill.
Two people, including a Pakistani national, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in the 1996 Modinagar bus blast case, while the third accused was discharged due to lack of evidence.
The bus was on its way to Nainital from New Delhi.
A government official in Lucknow said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased migrants and Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured.
