Villagers protesting against the expansion of a coal mine clashed with police in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, resulting in injuries on both sides. The protest stems from opposition to the Amera extension coal project of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), despite the land acquisition process being completed in 2016.
Coal India (CIL) produced 89 million tonnes (MT) in March-24, up 6 per cent year on year (Y-o-Y) and offtake was 69 MT, up 7 per cent Y-o-Y. FY24 production was 774 MT, up 10 per cent Y-o-Y. Offtake was 754 MT, up 9 per cent Y-o-Y. CIL targets production of 838 MT in FY25, up 8 per cent Y-o-Y over FY24.
The CAG report, tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, said because of non-deployment of pay loaders, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd, a CIL subsidiary, failed to utilise gainfully the existing crushing facilities and to earn an additional revenue of Rs 12.76 crore (Rs 127.6 million) during June 2010 and May 2011.
State-owned CIL on Monday said coal supply to the power sector rose 15.6 per cent to 49.7 million tonne last month in the wake of high demand of the dry fuel from electricity generating plants and stressed that it is planning to augment its dispatches further, especially to power plants in the coming months. The statement comes at a time when several parts of the country are grappling with power crisis. "With the intense demand for coal continuing unabated driven by an upward spiral in the electricity generation, CIL (Coal India) pushed up its supplies to power plants of the country to 49.7 million tonnes (MT) in April'22.
The death toll in the blast at coal mines of the South Eastern Coalfield Limited in Chhattisgarh's Koria district has risen to six.
There are allegations that the Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh govt is putting pressure on South Eastern Coalfields to not renew the contract with Sainik Mining whose promoter Rudra Sen Sindhu is the son-in-law of the late Sahib Singh Varma, a BJP leader and former chief minister of Delhi.
"The accident occurred near Darritola station, about 400 km from Raipur, when the Bishrampur-Bilaspur passenger train jumped rails at around 2300 IST," Korea Collector Durgesh Mishra said.
In all, 25 Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) posts, 8 MD posts and 2 Chairman posts are lying vacant, according to a written reply by Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises P Radhakrishnan in the Lok Sabha.
The PPP model for CIL was first mooted by the Planning Commission.
The increase in production will be from the existing mines.
The BSE Sensex was down 326 points at 23,277 and the Nifty was down 107 points at 7,056.
The companies are crying foul over the cancellation of 25 blocks held by 68 firms over the past two days.
Though the current National Democratic Alliance government has not endorsed the figure, it has not even repudiated it.
